SUBJECT: 9/11 Memorial Service
I had planned on writing an extensive piece to go with this week’s PIX OF THE WEEK – but there is probably nothing I can say that these photos can’t say for me. However, I should add that being down here in NYC covering the 9/11 Memorial Service and meeting many of the families of those who lost loved ones, helped to put a real face to those lost in this great tragedy for me. And hopefully my photos and the many stories that you have seen these past few weeks will do the same for you. I will post additional shots to my Facebook page later today if you are interested in seeing them: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=654596257

SUBJECT: Captain Richard Philips
For five days in April 2009, the world was glued to their TV screens as Captain Richard Phillips became the center of an extraordinary international drama when he was captured by Somali pirates who attempted to hijack his ship, the first of a U.S. ship in more than 200 years. The hostage drama began on Wednesday, April 8th when a small band of pirates swung a ladder to the vessel and climbed from their skiff onto the Maersk Alabama, a container ship ferrying food aid to East Africa. To protect his crew, Captain Phillips made a conscious decision knowing full well that he might pay the ultimate price for his decision. The dramatic story of Captain Richard Phillips and his crew aboard the Maersk Alabama will be heading to the big screen courtesy of Columbia Pictures and a just released book – “A Captains duty, Somali pirates, Navy seals, and dangerous days at sea “tell of previously unknown facts of his experience and his remarkable rescue.

Captain Phillips was born in Manchester, N.H., grew up in Winchester, Massachusetts, in a family with seven other siblings, and is a 1979 graduate of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, he has been a member of the International Organization of Masters, Mates & Pilots Union since 1979, and a licensed American merchant mariner. He has sailed in the capacity of ships master since 1991. He became Captain of the MV Maersk Alabama in 2008. Captain Phillips married Andrea Coggio, in 1988 and they have two children, Mariah and Danny and reside in Underhill, Vermont.

SUBJECT: Hebie Hancock ![]() LOCATION: Discover Jazz Festival (Burlington, VT) CAMERA: Canon 5D Mark II LENS: Canon 70-200 F2.8 L Series IS Lens DATE: June 2011 Born in Chicago in 1940, jazz legend Herbie Hancock first burst onto the scene nearly 50 years ago with Watermelon Man from the album Takin’ Off released on the Blue Note label back in 1962. Shortly thereafter in 1963, he joined Miles Davis's "second great quintet” on piano all while finding time to record dozens of sessions for the Blue Note label both under his own name and as a side man for some of jazz greatest names. Over the past 5 decades, Herbie Hancock has become an icon of modern music blending the sounds of jazz, funk, rock, soul, blues and electronic music to huge success. He has won dozens of accolades including 14 Grammy awards and an Oscar for composing the soundtrack to the 1986 film Round Midnight. He is also the guy who composed and recorded those funky sounds on the soundtrack to Fat Albert. Of course many from my generation (the MTV Generation) were first introduced to Herbie when he released the instrumental break dance smash and MTV video Rockit back in 1983. Rockit is credited with being the first mainstream single to feature “scratching.” Herbie is currently wrapping up his world tour in support of his latest release the Imagine Project, an international recording and film project that features collaborations between a dozen superstars including: Dave Mathews, Pink, The Chieftains, Los Lobos, John Legend and many more. The following image was shot during Mr. Hancock’s performance last week during the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival, which continues thru this weekend. SUBJECT: Imagine LOCATION: Central Park West 72nd Street (NYC) CAMERA: Canon 5D Mark II LENS: Canon 23-105mm L Series F4 Lens DATE: December 2010
Today marks the 30th anniversary of the death of John Lennon (October 9, 1940 - December 8, 1980).
On a more personal note, I believe everyone will experience a handful of times over the course of their life, a major event and moment in time when we remember exactly where we were or what we were doing. For those in previous generations to my own - it was the Kennedy Assassination or the Apollo 11 landing on the moon. For me, it was 9/11, the Challenger Disaster, the Miracle on Ice and the passing of John Lennon. To this day, I still remember exactly where I was and what I was doing like it was yesterday when I first heard the news. And it’s something I will never forget.
It’s hard to argue that there are few other people in the last 100 years who left more of an impression and perhaps touched more lives when he was alive than John Lennon did. Even 30 years since his passing, and 40 years since the Beatles disbanded, everyday we still hear his music and message - and my guess is - we will continue to do so for centuries to come. I know for me, the Beatles, (and John Lennon especially), greatly influenced my life growing up and continues to do so very much to this day.
For this week’s PIX OF THE WEEK selection, I choose an image that I took of the Imagine Mosaic which is part of the Strawberry Fields Memorial, a landscaped section of New York’s Central Park honoring John Lennon. The Memorial is located at the Park’s entrance on Central Park West and 72nd Street and is situated directly across from the Dakota which was Lennon’s residence at the time of his death and where he was gunned down by Mark David Chapman. The Memorial was underwritten by Yoko Ono and was dedicated on what would have been Lennon’s 45th birthday in 1985 and each day draws thousands of visitors who wish to pay their respects.
Please have a listen to what is arguably one of the greatest songs ever written in the history of all music. A song, which perhaps now more than ever, has even a greater meaning than when it was first released in October 1971.

SUBJECT: Iwo Jima Memorial LOCATION: Arlington, Virginia CAMERA: Canon EF LENS: Canon 50mm FD 1.4 Lens FILM: Fuji RDP III
I choose this photo for today edition in honor of Veteran’s Day. Please take a moment and remember those men and women who have served our country and especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom. And please say a prayer for all those wonderful men and women who are serving in our armed forces right now in the many corners of the globe – especially in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Veteran’s Day is traditionally celebrated on November 11 in the States and is most often referred to as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world to mark the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I on 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.
So if you see a Veteran today – please give them a big thanks and let them know that their efforts and sacrifices are deeply appreciated!!!
NOTE: This photo is especially pertinent today, as Wednesday the 10th is the anniversary of the founding of the US Marine Corps in 1775. The Iwo Jima Memorial (aka Marine Corps War Memorial) pays tribute to the USMC and is based on the iconic photo taken by AP photographer Joe Rosenthal after the Battle of Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945.
I purposely photographed the Memorial “head-on” as so many images of this memorial are shot from the side – just wanted to have a different take on things.

SUBJECT: Ed Asner LOCATION: Burlington, VT CAMERA: Canon 5D Mark II LENS: Canon 24-105mm F4 L Series IS Lens DATE: March 2010
Legendary screen actor Ed Asner was in town last week performing the one-man play FDR and I had the opportunity to photograph him before the show backstage.
Ed Asner has been active in the entertainment field for the last 7 decades, but for many, Asner is best remembered as playing the gruff Lou Grant on the Mary Tyler Moore Show in the early to mid 1970s. I might be dating myself, but any couch potato will tell you -- The MTM Show was by far one of the most acclaimed and groundbreaking television shows ever produced and launched many careers and/or featured some amazing actors including Gavin MacLeod (later Capt Stubbing from the Love Boat), Betty White, Ted Knight (Judge Smails in Caddyshack), Valerie Harper (Rhoda) and Cloris Leachman.
After the MTM Show, Asner went on to star in Alex Haley’s Roots, a roll that would earn him an Emmy as well as reprising his role of Lou on Lou Grant for another 5 years. In addition to countless film appearances (i.e. Christmas Vacation, Elf and Fort Apache, The Bronx), he has provided the voice for countless cartoons including the lead voice of Carl Fredricksen in last year’s Pixar hit Up.
In addition, Ed Asner served for 2 terms as the President of the Screen Actor’s Guild and has won a total of 7 Emmy Awards.
Here is a quick clip from the first episode of the MTM Show - even 40 years later, this show holds its own:

SUBJECT: Asher Bradshaw LOCATION: Venice Beach, CA CAMERA: Canon 5D Mark II LENS: Canon 24-105mm F4 L Series IS Lens DATE: September 2010
6 year old Asher Bradshaw is fast becoming one of the top up and coming skaters in the Southern California skate scene. He has been skating for almost a year and half and has carved himself out quite a following.
Each day, his father Tom takes him to the Venice Beach Skate Park to practice for hours at a time – and the crowds always gather to watch this kid. I might be ahead of myself, but are we looking at the next Tony Hawk???
Check out these two YouTube clips of this kid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkclYFNBbpA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WX8Sb-1SqWM
Remember, these clips were shot of him when he had been skating only for about a year, so when I photographed him last month, he was even better than these clips show – and according to Tom, he gets better and better each day!!!
Exposure was at 1/80th of a second at F5.6. Lighting was provided by a single Canon 580 Speedlight mounted in a small soft box atop a PocketWizard Flex and triggered by a PocketWizard Mini.
PS - notice the Zephyr Skateboard skirt he has on, they made sure that was included in the shots!!!

SUBJECT: Frankie Meeink LOCATION: Hilton Hotel (Worchester, MA) CAMERA: Canon 5D Mark II LENS: Canon 24-105mm F4 L Series IS Lens DATE: September 2010
Frank Meeink has been on the national lecture circuit for nearly a decade, speaking to various groups on the topic of racial diversity and acceptance.
He provides listeners with an honest, open and deeply moving account of his violent childhood in South Philadelphia, which primed him to hate, and ultimately led to him joining a skinhead gang by age 14. By 16, Frank was one of the youngest skinhead gang leaders on the East Coast. By 18, he was doing hard time in an Illinois federal prison.
While serving time, Frank began questioning his hatred, thanks largely in part to his African-American teammates on a prison football team and friendships developed while incarcerated. Shortly after being paroled, Frank defected from the white supremacy movement. Later, the Oklahoma City bombing help to inspire him to work towards stopping the hatred he once had felt (Timothy McVeigh was directly linked to the white supremacy movement).
His story, without a doubt provides powerful insight as to why any wayward youth would resort to gang activity, be that street gangs in the inner city involved in drug dealing or a group of skinhead thugs whose mission is to simply hate and to promote violence.
In addition to Frank's book "Autobiography of a Recovering Skinhead," and lecture tour, he has partnered with the Philadelphia Flyers in launching an innovative hate prevention program called Harmony Through Hockey.
Frank's book, Autobiography of a Recovering Skinhead: The Frank Meeink Story, is available on Amazon and is a MUST read:

On a personal note, Frank Meeink, is by far one of the most interesting and forthright subjects I have had the pleasure to photograph and profile in recent time. It was truly a pleasure to meet him and hear his story and read his book.
Exposure was at 1/160th of a second at F11. Lighting was provided by a Dynalite strobe pack and 4040 head mounted in a medium sized softbox triggered by a PocketWizard Mini.

SUBJECT: Sonny Rollins LOCATION: Flynn Theatre (Burlington, VT) CAMERA: Canon 1D Mark II-N LENS: Canon 70-200 F2.8 L Series IS Lens DATE: June 2010
Grammy-winning American jazz tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins, (who will be 80 in September), is widely recognized as one of the most important and influential jazz musicians of the post-bebop era. His long, prolific career began at the age of 11, and he was playing with piano legend Thelonious Monk before he was 20.
As of 2010, Mr. Rollins is still touring and recording, having outlived most of his contemporaries such as John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Max Roach, and Art Blakey, all performers with whom he recorded.
Mr. Rollins is certainly a jazz giant and living legend!!! Here is a quick little Youtube clip about his life you might find interesting

This shot was done for Pizzagalli Construction as part of their new marketing/branding campaign and was shot at their Yellow River Water Reclamation Facility project outside of Atlanta, GA.
The concept of the shot was to show that if you hire PC for a job, they are on site before the crack of dawn and will do anything it takes to get the job done. And sure enough when we arrived onsite at 5-something in the morning (when it was still pitch black), the office trailer was humming with action, equipment was being fired up and a long day on site was about to begin.
A special thanks goes out to Brian Mullins at New Breed Marketing for concept design and Crystal Dellechiaie of Pizzagalli Construction for coordinating all the logistics of travel, equipment, talent, etc and even doubling as our moveable lighting stand. This shot is an outtake from a recent photo shoot. Born in Portugal, but raised all over the world, (Liberia, British Colombia, Zimbabwe, the US, etc.), Claudia now splits her time between Mozambique and South Africa.
In terms of Mozambique, I think most people really are only familiar with this country as the place that financed and gave shelter to members of South African liberation movement (ANC) in the 1970s and the subject of Bob Dylan’s hit track from the DESIRE album:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HUQKoYKPlU
A little larger than the State of Texas, Mozambique borders the likes of SA, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Swaziland, it was originally colonized by the Portuguese in the early 1500s. It gained independence in 1975 and in the years following, was the host of a very intense civil war that lasted 15 years.
Here is an interesting little fact, Mozambique’s GDP last year was about $9B. To put that in perspective, Bill Gates was said to have lost $18B in the same year and even so, his net worth is still over 5x the total GDP of this country of 23M people!!!

To honor this special holiday weekend and one of the greatest albums of all time – I decided to do something a bit different.
Released on June 4, 1984, BORN IN THE USA was Bruce Springsteen’s 7th studio album and would go on to become his most commercial success ever. The album produced a record-tying string of seven Top 10 singles. The original image for the album cover was shot by legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz and ranks as one of the most recognizable album covers of all time.
DANCING IN THE DARK, the first single release from the record, was an instant commercial success reaching #2 on the Billboard Chart. The video, of course, gave American audiences our first taste of a very young Courtney Cox (only 20) – check her out at the end of the video.

Just ask any of my ex’s over the years – they’ll be the first to tell you dancing really isn’t my thing (better be wearing steel toe protection before taking the dance floor with me). But after seeing and photographing the Alvin Ailey Dance Company last week – it almost inspires me to slip on the tights myself!!!
The Alvin Ailey Dance Company (www.alvinailey.org) was formed in 1958 by Afro-American choreographer and dancer Alvin Ailey. Ailey is credited with popularizing modern dance and since it’s founding, they have has performed for an estimated 21 million in 71 countries. The company and its dancers and artistic staff have also been recognized as cultural ambassadors numerous times, including being awarded the National Medal of Arts.
Sadly, Ailey died from complications of AIDS in 1989 at the age of 58. However, his dance company lives on under the artistic direction of Judith Jamison.

SUBJECT: Chuck Brown LOCATION: Annapolis, Maryland CAMERA: Canon 5D Mark II LENS: Canon 24-105mm F4 L Series IS Lens DATE: November 2009
This week’s photo is definitely one to be added to my Living Legends Series.
Often called the "The Godfather of Go-Go” (a subgenre of funk), I first saw Chuck Brown perform as a high school student while growing up in Washington, DC in the mid-80s. This was at a time when he would perform almost nightly throughout the DC area from at one skating rink to gymnasium to Anacostia Park celebration after another.
Brown began his career in the 1960s playing the guitar with Jerry Butler. He scored a #1 hit in the late 70s with BUSTIN’ LOOSE which has since been adopted by the Washington Nationals as their home run celebration song. Known for recording go-go covers of early jazz and blues songs by the likes of Duke Ellington, Louis Jordan and T-Bone Walker – his most celebrated album is hands down the one he recorded with the late Eva Cassidy in the mid-90s titled THE OTHER SIDE – a collection of jazz and blues duets.
Mr. Brown continues still performs to this day sharing the stage with many great funk, jazz and blues legends.
I took this shot this past Thanksgiving Weekend before his show in the back alleyway of the famous Ram’s Head/Fordham Brewery in historic Annapolis, Maryland. Lighting was provided by 2 Dynalite heads triggered by a PocketWizard Mini. Exposure was at 1/80th of a second at F6.3.

PS – one thing I always notice about these older performers is they always know how to dress (110% class) – from their custom tailored suits to the ties they wear all they way down to the shoes and socks, not like the artists today who think an Allen Iverson jersey is styling!

SUBJECT: Arlo Guthrie LOCATION: Flynn Theatre Burlington, Vermont CAMERA: Canon 5D Mark II LENS: Canon 70-200mm F2.8 L Series IS Lens DATE: November 2009
Seeing that this week is Thanksgiving, I can’t think of a more appropriate subject than the legendary ARLO GUTHRIE.
For those of you who don’t know, Arlo is the son of the great late folk singer Woody Guthrie (“This Land Is Your Land”), one of the original performers at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and of course the composer of “Alice's Restaurant Massacree” – a 20 minute song which tells the true story Alice and her little restaurant, the old church she lived in with all the garbage and how when Arlo was called up for the draft to serve in Vietnam, he was rejected and labeled unfit for military service as a result of a criminal record — consisting in its entirety of a single arrest, court appearance, fine and clean-up order for littering and creating a public nuisance on Thanksgiving Day in 1965, when he was 18 years old.
For a short period of time after its release in 1967, "Alice's Restaurant" was in frequent rotation on nearly every college and counter-culture radio station in the country and went on to become a symbol of the late '60s. Two years later, a film was made based on the song staring Arlo and for the last 40 plus years, many radio stations across the States have made playing "Alice's Restaurant" a Thanksgiving Day tradition.
Check out Arlo performing one of my all time favorite songs from the above-mentioned album:

SUBJECT: Trace Bundy LOCATION: Burlington, Vermont CAMERA: Canon 5D Mark II LENS: Canon 70-200mm F2.8 L Series IS Lens DATE: November 2009
Based out of Boulder, Colorado Trace Bundy has become something of an Internet phenomena - a prime example of the power of Youtube one might say. Completely self-taught, because as he could never afford lesson, he is known to his fans as "The Acoustic Ninja" for his unique legato/finger tapping skills. His playing style features him playing with both hands on the fretboard, intricate fingerpicking arpeggios and the inventive use of multiple capos.
When performing live, he employs a live looping technique. Check this really cool Youtube clip out. I think after hearing and seeing this, you won't ever think of GnR, Axel Rose and Slash the same way again. Really amazing stuff!

from 15 minutes (old crowded mobile lounges) to less than 2 minutes. I was just amazed with the design, lighting and efficiency of the train terminal.
