SUBJECT: Trace Bundy LOCATION: Burlington, Vermont CAMERA: Canon 5D Mark II LENS: Canon 70-200mm F2.8 L Series IS Lens DATE: November 2009
Based out of Boulder, Colorado Trace Bundy has become something of an Internet phenomena - a prime example of the power of Youtube one might say. Completely self-taught, because as he could never afford lesson, he is known to his fans as "The Acoustic Ninja" for his unique legato/finger tapping skills. His playing style features him playing with both hands on the fretboard, intricate fingerpicking arpeggios and the inventive use of multiple capos.
When performing live, he employs a live looping technique. Check this really cool Youtube clip out. I think after hearing and seeing this, you won't ever think of GnR, Axel Rose and Slash the same way again. Really amazing stuff!

For those of you on my list from the great 802, Trace is playing at UVM’s Davis Center on Feb 12th – def worth checking out before heading down to Nectars for the reggae.
As a short side note, before pursuing his music career in a full-time capacity, Bundy was an engineering professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Exposure was at 1/160th of a second at F10. Lighting was a single Dynalite 4040 head with a medium-sized softbox fired by a PocketWizard Mini.

SUBJECT: Xavier Rudd LOCATION: Higher Ground Music Hall (Burlington, VT) CAMERA: Canon 1D Mark IIN LENS: Canon 70-200mm F2.8 L Series IS Lens DATE: July 2009
I always get really excited about photographing emerging artists because you never know when they might grow into the next Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash or U2. So when I got the opportunity to shoot Australian multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter Xavier Rudd this past July, I was particularly jazzed. I first heard of Xavier when a few of his tunes appeared in the not so memorable movie SURFER DUDE starring Matthew McConaughey. Total crap movie, but some great music featured throughout the film.
Xavier is interesting in the fact that he plays guitar, the didgeridoo, lap steel, banjo and harmonica all while taking over vocal duties. In addition to a having a bit of reggae feel to his sound, he’s seems to have picked up where another famous Australian act, Peter Garrett and Midnight Oil left off in terms of music that incorporates socially conscious themes, such as environmentalism and the rights of Aborigal people. Check him out on Youtube and let me know what you think:

SUBJECT: Buddy Guy LOCATION: Burlington Waterfront (Lake Champlain 400th Festival) CAMERA: Canon 1D Mark IIN LENS: Canon 70-200mm F2.8 L Series IS Lens DATE: July 2009 Born in Lettsworth, Louisiana in 1936, 5-time Grammy Award Winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Buddy Guy has been playing his style of Chicago Blues for the better part of 6 decades. Buddy Guy has been credited to directly influencing the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimmy Page and countless other major blues/rock guitarists over the past 40+ years. In addition, his songs have been covered by Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Mayall and many others. Even Mr. Slowhand himself is quoted as saying, "Buddy Guy is by far and without a doubt the best guitar player alive..." All I can say is that if you haven't had a chance to see this man jam - please do, it's a must, you won't be disappointed. SUBJECT: Bill Buckner
LOCATION: Centennial Field (Burlington, VT) CAMERA: Canon 1D Mark IIN LENS: Canon 24-105mm F4 L Series IS Lens ![]() DATE: July 6, 2009 This past Monday I photographed former Red Sox Baseman Bill Buckner when he was in town for a Lake Monsters game. I think most people forget that Bill Buckner played in the majors for 21 years. I'll say that again - 21 YEARS!!! Not only was Buckner a former all-star selection when he played for the Chicago Cubs, but he even held the NL batting average title at one point in his career. Perhaps it's been the 20+ years and/or the two World Series titles that has let the Red Sox Nation forgive and forget - but either way its nice to see the very warm welcoming he received at last year's home opener in Fenway.

SUBJECT: Tony Bennett ![]() LOCATION: Flynn Theatre (Burlington, VT) CAMERA: Canon 1D Mark IIN LENS: Canon 70-200mm F2.8 L Series IS Lens DATE: July 2009 Tony Bennett has been performing on the stage for the better part of over 7 decades and I don't care what genre of music you are into, he still leaves audiences in awe - even at the age of 83!!! I never got to see Sinatra perform, but from what I saw of Tony Bennett, I can only imagine that this was probably the closest thing you'd ever get to seeing a true great performer and one of the best in the history of show business. Exposure was 1/100th of a second at F2.8 PS - I didn't know this until I did a bit of research of Mr. Bennett - did you know that his real name is Anthony Dominick Benedetto and his stage name of "Tony Bennett" was given to him by the legendary Bob Hope. SUBJECT: Seth Lehman of Pizzagalli Construction LOCATION: Abingdon, Maryland CAMERA: Canon 5D Mark IIN ![]() LENS: Canon 24-105 F4 L Series IS Lens DATE: August 2009 For those of you who know me well, you probably know that I’ve seen THE GREAT ESCAPE over 100x and it’s my favorite movie of all time. So needless to say, when I had the opportunity to do this shot, you can only imagine how excited I was. This shot of Seth Lehman (Senior Construction Superintendent at Pizzagall Construction) was taken in a tunnel that is being built under I-95 in Abingdon, Maryland as part of a large $100M+ wastewater construction project. From what I understand this 105-inch tunnel will serve as a channel for piping in and out of the facility. Not only did our equipment have to be lowed in by crane, but we also had to climb down a network of ladders into the shaft that entered into the tunnel system. Yes, it was muddy, wet, slippery and very treacherous, but it came as a very welcome relief to the 95F hot and 100% humidity at the surface (the tunnel stays a constant 55F no matter what the weather). Exposure was at 1/20th of a second at F4. Lighting was provided by two Canon 580 flashes attached to a pair of PocketWizard Flex units held by NBM Creative Director Brian Mullins and an assistant and triggered by a PocketWizard Mini mounted atop the camera. He was very fascinated with all my camera gear and I invited him in to the studio to check things out. Isaac is 10 years old and is from Tanzania and has been here in the States for about a year. He had this amazing smile and an amazing self-confidence of himself, especially for being 10, so I asked him to pose for me. He said he would if I gave him a soda (actually he pocked 3 or 4 of them). Probably like you, other than knowing Tanzania is a country in Africa, I didn’t know much about Tanzania so I looked it up. The East African nation of Tanzania is about twice the size of California and is bordered by Kenya and Uganda to the north, Rwanda, Burundi and the Congo to the west, and Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique to the south and has a population of approximately 40M. Isaac told me he really likes soccer and tells me he much prefers Vermont to Africa, but doesn’t like the cold. I photographed Isaac with single Dynalite 440 Head fitted with a medium-sized soft box. I placed a pair of Canon 580EXs into the diving bell (each mounted atop of a PocketWizard Flex). I then placed a Dynalite 4040 head and pack fitted with a beauty dish outside the craft. What I really like about this image is that it really has that "old school" feel and look to things - and no, not something from the MJ era - but from the Russell and Chamberlain era when games were played in dark dingy broken down arenas and smoke filled the rafters as thick as fog. And anyone who has ever been to Memorial Auditorium (built in the 1920s) knows what I am talking about. This image was taken using the new PocketWizard Mini and is a real good example of its high-speed sync capabilities. A bank of 4 packs of lighting was set up hours prior to tip off (a pair of Profoto packs at the far court mounted in the rafters and a pair of Elinchom units mounted above in the near court each with a PocketWizard Multimax plugged in). ![]() Exposure was at 1/500th of a second and F5.6 J.
