Grace and the Band were recording a few tracks at EMP Studios last month and had the pleasure of photographing and listening in on their recording session.  Some really great new material in the works from the band!!!

Go to www.gracepotter.com or check them out on Myspace at:

http://www.myspace.com/gracepotterandthenocturnals for more band info, tour date,  free music downloads, etc.

PS - I included a couple of pix of drummer Matt Burr since rarely are drummers ever photographed and he had the best lighting on him versus anyone else in the band!!!

PIX OF THE WEEK - The Wall

DATE: December 27, 2008

Part about me says I should wait until Memorial Day to send this photo out, but the other part of me says why should we only think about and honor those who gave the greatest sacrifice at the last Monday of some month in the spring.

This shot was taken at about 1A so as to ensure no one would be around and get in the way of the image.  I took this shot by mounting a camera on a tripod.  I then delayed the shutter release to avoid any movement or shake of the camera and then when the shutter opened, I walked along The Wall out of view firing a Canon 580 EX II about a dozen times.

Exposure was at 13 secs at F5.6 (ISO 320).

NOTE -- Special props go to my good friend Matt who assisted me and walked from the Capital to the Lincoln Memorial with me at 2A in the morning on a cold December night.

DATE: November 27, 2008

Recently Paul Kaza from Paul Kaza and Associates asked me to shoot a project for one their clients, Housing Vermont (a non-profit development company that specializes in creating affordable rental housing).   Paul'’s idea was that instead of shooting a typical apartment building shot that we should instead “humanize” things in the campaign by showing some of the residents that Housing Vermont has helped.

Here is one of my favorite shots from the shoot, a Bosnian and Herzegovina immigrant named Ešref Avdibegović.

Prior to Bosnia's civil war, Eref owned an import-export company. After the war started in 1992, Ešref immigrated with family to Germany and in 1997 moved to Vermont. He currently lives in Burlington with his wife and two children.

The shot was lit with 2 Dynalite heads (one in a softbox and the other using a honeycomb grid).  Exposure was a set at 1/125th of a second at F16 (ISO 100)

Hailing from St. John’s Newfoundland, Great Big Sea has been brining their unique Celtic/Rock sound to audiences throughout Canada and the United States for the better part of 15 years.   Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph them on at the Flynn Theatre as they make their way on their current tour.  Not only was it Halloween, but it was also declared Great Big Sea Day by the Mayor of Burlington.

If you get a chance to see this great Canadian act from the Maritimes – you won’t be disappointed.  Check them out at:

PIX OF THE WEEK - Kaki King

DATE: October 9, 2008

NYC-based Kaki King performed the other week at Higher Ground and I had the pleasure of shooting her.  Her playing style combines fret-tapping with slap bass techniques, using the guitar for percussional beats, as well as sound layering and looping, which creates a percussive and complex sound.

If you ever get a chance to see this pint-sized guitar talent play, I highly suggest it.  In 2006, Kaki was named as a “Guitar God” by Rolling Stone Magazine, the first ever female to make the list in the history of the publication.  And if you’ve ever seen the movie AUGUST RUSH, starring Robin Williams, you will know what I am talking about -- she appears in the film performing the main character’s hands and playing his guitar parts.

In addition, she contributed to the music for the 2007 film, INTO THE WILD, which was produced and directed by Sean Penn for which she was nominated for an Best Original Score Golden Globe Award.

Images shot between 1/50th to 1/100th of a second with the lens wide open.

I got some amazing shots of Ornette while covering his recent performance at the Flynn Theatre as part of the 2008 Discover Jazz Festival.  I selected this shot of Ornette because it is much different than your typical jazz pix – I like how I just caught him as he looked over to his guitar player behind him.

For those of you who don’t know, Ornette is 0ne of the most important (and controversial) innovators of the jazz avant-garde as has been since he burst onto the scene in 1959. If you get a chance to catch him perform – you really should, as he truly is one of the last remaining jazz greats from that generation still with us.  For more details on Ornette and his 50-year career check these links out:

Pix of the Week - Danielle by Mike Worthington Photographer
Sorry I’ve been MIA as of late with the PIX OF THE WEEK, its just been crazy busy lately.

Anyway, after a few year hiatus from modeling, my friend Danielle asked me to take some shots of her so that she can update her book.  As you can see, even a few years out of the biz – she looks sexy as ever and never missed a beat.  In fact, it was impossible for me to just pick out 1 shot from our session – so I narrowed it down to 3.

Lighting was provided with a single Dynalite 4040 head fitted with a softbox.  Exposure was at 1/160th of a second at F11 at 100 ISO.

This week's shot is the Horn Section of the legendary Wailers band.  Yes, the same band as in Bob Marley and the Wailers.

http://www.wailers.com

According to their publicist, Versa Manos (Gorgeous PR Inc.), the band is slated to release their first CD of new material in over 20 years.  The band is now fronted by LA-born Elan Atias and still features the likes of legendary bassist Aston "Family Man" Barrett and Al Anderson on lead guitar.  If you ever get a chance to see this line up of what is arguably the greatest reggae band to ever originate out of Jamaica, I highly encourage you to do so you will NOT be disappointed!!!

PIX OF THE WEEK - Safa from Rupa and the April Fishes

This image is from a photo session I did with a wonderful, up & coming and unique music act called RUPA & THE APRIL FISHES the other week.

http://theaprilfishes.com/

http://www.myspace.com/aprilfishes

Jacob Edgar of CUMBANCHA RECORDS asked me to shoot the band during a recent performance here and he also then arranged for a studio session while the band was enroute from Montreal to Boston.  This is one of my favorite images that I Sofa_from_Rupa__the_April_Fishes1took that day and it is of Safa Shokrai the standup bass player for the band.

If you ever get a chance to catch Rupa and her Fishes you will not be disappointed.  In June Rupa and her band will be touring thru Europe but back in the States and Canada in June.  You can catch them in the likes of NYC in Central Park in late June and on July 5th during the Montreal Jazz fest and then they back touring on the west coast in the end of July.  You'll think you stepped into a scene in some crazy movie with a bunch of gypsies!!!  Really folks, Rupa is a can't miss act.  Plus, she's a doctor of internal medicine too which is really cool!!!

The background was a simple "fashion gray" seamless Savage paper backdrop. Lighting was provided by a single Dynalite 4040 head mounted in a medium soft box to my left.

Exposure was at 1/125th of a second at F16 at 100 ISO (focal length 105mm)

It was a beautiful sunny day at Stowe this past Sunday and I riding with my camera in my backpack when I decided to take a quick minute break to get a few shots of the park riders. I positioned myself under one of the large jumps and then set the camera on 8.5 fps on the "servo" mode, I added a circular polarizing filter to the lens to darken the sky a bit and to cut dow

PIX OF THE WEEK - Wedding Dress (Ria)

SUBJECT: Wedding Dress (Ria)

RM0H0383

LOCATION: Ft. Ethan Allen Studio (Colchester, VT)

CAMERA: Canon Mark 1D IIN

LENS: Canon 24-105mm F4 IS L series

DATE: March 2008

In the first image, I took my inspiration from the  old 1940s Hollywood Lighting techniques used by the greats such as George Hurrell. I had Ria sit on the gray seamless paper backdrop about 8 feet from the curve. I lit her using 2 Dynalite heads -- one  overhead mounted on a boom with a snoot attached. I place the otherlight about 12 feet away from her to my left and about 9 feet up   with a honeycomb grid spot directed at her dress (the main light being on the boom overhead). Exposure was 1/160th of a second at F10  (100 ISO).

In the second image, Ria was standing the white seamless paper about 10-12 feet from the curve to the floor. I placed large black 4x8 foot panels on either side of her just out of  view so as to create some slight shadows on the edges and to  prevent  light spill from the background heads which were being  fired at full  power. The main light was a Dynalite 4040 head fired  thru a medium  soft box mounted behind me high up. I also used a  another Dynalite  4040 head with a honeycomb grid spot as well to  fill in any shadows  caused by the other head being mounted high.  The background lighting  was provided by 2 heads fired at full  power. Exposure was at 1/160th  of a second at F11.

A storm was rolling in from the north, so I quickly grabbed my camera and a tripod and ran down the stairs to the beach and set things up.  I attached a cable release to the shutter button and set the aperture to somewhere in the middle (approx F8) and set the shutter speed to the "bulb" setting and waited.  Using a long shutter speed I was able to capture several bursts of lightening in the distance before the rain started to come down.

NOTE – I used a neutral density filter on the lens so as prevent over-exposure.

FILM – Fuji Sensia 200

I was riding in one of those rickety buses (they don’t even have windows) that the local islanders ride to get around the island Viti Levu on to get around on my way back to the village in Latoka where I was staying when I spied this baby looking at me from the rearview mirror while sitting on its mother’s lap. I couldn’t resist the opportunity to snap this photo.

Probably to this day, this is one of my all time favorite shots I’ve ever taken – at least in my Top 10.

I shot the image in shutter priority at about 125th of a second.
