SUBJECT: DJ NASTEE LOCATION: Fort Ethan Allen Studio (Colchester, VT) CAMERA: Canon Mark 1D IIN LENS: Canon 24-105mm F4 IS L series January 13, 2008
The guys from VT UNION dropped by the studio this past weekend for some promotional material shots. In addition to shooting the group together, we did some individual shots. Here are a few shots of DJ Nastee that I think really came out well and brought out his personality.
Since I always shoot in RAW format, I normally adjust my lens to be between 1/3 to 1/2 stop under what my light meter reading says that way I can ensure that all the information is captured by the CCD sensor. By slightly underexposing things, this allows the flexibility to play with the image later for different effects. It is always easier to increase the exposure later, as opposed to decreasing it (if you overexpose an image, the information is lost forever). However, in this case, to get the style of lighting and contrast I wanted, I actually bracketed the shots to be about a 1/3 to 1/2 stop over the meter reading.
Also, when shooting against the white background in the studio, I normally have my subjects stand about 10-12 feet in front of the wall. In this case, I had DJ Nastee stand only about 6 to 7 feet in front of the background so that some of the light would bleed around him creating something of a rim light effect, however, I had to
be very careful with this approach, as my light meter was giving me a F45 on the background. Since VT Union is a Rap/DJ group, I adjusted the contrast in the camera (I didn't' want to mess with things in Photoshop later) to bring out that lighting sty
le that is popular in mags like VIBE, ESPN, etc.
Front lighting provided by a 2 Dynalite flash heads (one mounted in a soft box the other simply with a standard reflector. Background lighting provided by 2 Novatron flash heads fired at full power (both background and front strobes fired remotely by a PocketWizard Plus II). Fill lighting achieved by using a silver circular reflector hand held by an assistant about 3 feet from the subject.
Exposure was F14 at 1/125th of a second at 100 ISO.

PIX OF THE WEEK - Karen from Nairobi, Kenya

SUBJECT: Karen from Nairobi
LOCATION: Fort Ethan Allen Studio (Colchester, VT) CAMERA: Canon Mark 1D IIN LENS: Canon 24-105mm F4 IS L series DATE: December, 2007
Karen is a nursing student from Nairobi, Kenya. I had met her a couple of months before and told her that if she ever wants her picture taken to look me up. Anyway, some time later, she called me I had her come by the studio while she was on her winter school break.
Taking my inspiration from old the old National Geographic images from the 1920s (photographers back then used to often photograph the indigenous peoples they wrote about in profile to create a very powerful image), I wanted to shoot Karen in B&W much the same way. This would allow me to show her very defined jaw line and to highlight her really cool braids in her hair.
However, Karen has this infectious smile and personality that could light up just about any room - so I couldn't resist getting a few shots of her as her normal self too (smiling). In fact, I think she struggled a bit with the serious look!!!
Lighting was provided by a single Dynalite head fired thru a medium-sized soft box. Exposure was 1/160th of a second at F13. J. Michael Worthington, Jr. 802.578.8515 This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Heinz Valenta - PIX OF THE WEEK by Mike Worthington Photographer (Burlington, VT)

LOCATION: Fort Ethan Allen Studio (Colchester, VT) CAMERA: Canon Mark 1D IIN LENS: Canon 24-105mm F4 IS L series DATE: March 2008
Heinz came by the last week for some portfolio updates. We took a few casual shots that came out very well (what the original shoot was planned to accomplish) but he also had brought with him a tux so I figured this might be a good opportunity to experiment a bit.
The main light was a Dynalite 4040 head fired thru a medium soft box to the camera right on a light stand about 8 or 9 feet up and positioned about 5 or 6 feet from the subject. I also placed another flash head back about another additional 6 or 7 feet bounced thru an silver umbrella about 5 feet off the ground. A third head was positioned with a snoot attached aimed on the background to give a "spotlight" effect.
Exposure was at 1/125th of a second at F11 set at 100 ISO and a focal length of 40mm.

Keb' Mo' - PIX OF THE WEEK

SUBJECT: Keb’ Mo’
Keb’ Mo’ is a 3-time Grammy Award winning blues artist and in my opinion, by far the best contemporary blues artist on the planet today. Born Kevin Moore in South Central Los Angeles to parents from the Deep South, Keb’ Mo’ has picked up the Delta Blues sound where the greats like Muddy Waters left off. Also check out his website and tour schedule: Exposure was at 1/50th of a second at F2.8.
